These small palettes are very useful for many arts and crafts. They come in a pack of 15 making them very affordable.

I do not recommend using Black or White watercolor paint. Shadows made with ultra marine and alizarin crimson have more life in them than black. Ultra marine and burnt umber make a good charcoal black. Watercolors are by nature transparent/translucent. Adding white or black defeats the effect. If you want to add bright highlights, use a white gouache.

I use mostly Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolors. I also have a few Holbein colors. Danial Smith is also a good choice, though I haven’t used it. I don’t recommend using student grade paints if you’re serious about learning the medium as they react differently and are harder to control. With paint, brushes and paper, buy the best you can afford to avoid frustration and disappointment. You only need a few colors, and if you’re painting small as in a journal, they will last many years. Don’t throw away dry or empty tubes until you cut them open and take out all the that remains.

The colors I recommend are:

Cool/transparent colors:

French Ultra Marine

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Yellow

Sap Green

Burnt Sienna

Warm/translucent colors:

Cerulean Blue

Cadmium Red

Lemon Yellow

Olive Green

Burnt Umber

Most of my larger painting are done on Arches 140lb cold press. I also like 90lb cold press and for special projects, I’ll use 300lb cold press. (Hot press has a very smooth surface good for certain techniques.)

I’ve been using one of these field boxes for years. It’s small and has everything I need to paint on location.

This ID Card punch makes a nice slot about 3/4” long and 1/8” wide that I use for a closure on the small card journal.
